The Power of Water
The Heart of the Mill’s Drive System
The oil mill was powered by an overshot waterwheel. Water flowed onto the wheel from above, and its weight set the wheel in motion.
A 300m Water Supply
About 1,000 feet (300 meters) upstream from the mill, water from the Wahlbach stream was diverted by a weir. From there, it flowed through a millrace past the residence and then along a wooden flume, known locally as the Kandel, onto the waterwheel. After powering the wheel, the water flowed through the tailrace and returned to the stream.
Bringing History Back to Life
In 2009, Klaus Reimann reconstructed one of the mill’s two waterwheels based on its historic design, allowing visitors to experience the mill’s technology in action once again.
